Cancun's beaches are white-sand beaches with turquoise water located along the Caribbean coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. They stretch across 25 kilometers in a number "7" shape, from Punta Cancun to Punta Nizuc.
Cancun welcomes over 6 million international tourists per year, making it the most visited beach destination in Latin America. Its beaches are world-renowned for crystal-clear water, fine sand (made of pulverized coral) and warm temperatures year-round.
Important fact: All beaches in Mexico are public by federal law (Article 27 of the Constitution). Even if a hotel faces the ocean, it cannot block beach access. There are marked public access points throughout the Hotel Zone.

Sargassum is a type of seaweed that naturally washes up on Caribbean beaches. It is not toxic or dangerous, but it can affect the beach's appearance.
Peak sargassum season: May through August. Hotels and the government have daily cleanup crews.
Least affected beaches: Bay-side beaches (north zone) and Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres.

Locate all beaches, public access points, parking and amenities.
Arrive before 10am or after 4pm. Sunsets (5:30-6:30pm) are spectacular.
The R1 and R2 bus runs the entire Hotel Zone for $12 MXN (~$0.70 USD). Comes every 5-10 min.
Use SPF 50+ and reapply every 2 hours. In reef areas, only biodegradable sunscreen is allowed.
Bring cash in Mexican pesos. Many beach vendors don't accept cards.

Free public showers: Playa Delfines (4 showers), Playa Marlin (2 showers), Playa Langosta (by the pier). Other beaches offer showers at beach clubs.
Free parking: Playa Delfines (large lot), Playa Langosta, Playa Las Perlas. Paid parking: Playa Tortugas ($50-100 MXN/day), Playa Forum (shopping mall).
Beachfront restaurants: Playa Tortugas, Playa Forum, Playa Caracol. Beach vendors: At all public beaches (ceviche, corn, coconuts, beer).

During sea turtle nesting season, some beaches have additional nighttime restrictions. Do not use flashlights or camera flash near marked nests. If you see a turtle, keep your distance and do not touch it. Cancun protects 4 endangered turtle species: loggerhead, green, hawksbill and leatherback.
