What to Expect at Playa Norte

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is consistently ranked as Mexico's best beach and one of the finest in the Caribbean. Just 15 minutes by ferry from Cancun, it features crystal-clear turquoise waters, extremely gentle waves perfect for families, fine white sand, and the most spectacular sunsets in the region.

When you arrive at Playa Norte, you'll be greeted by turquoise waters so clear you can see your feet meters below the surface. Unlike the Hotel Zone beaches in Cancun, waves here are practically nonexistent thanks to its sheltered position at the island's northern tip.

Playa Norte for Families with Children

Playa Norte is ideal for families with children thanks to its virtually nonexistent waves, shallow waters where you can wade 30-50 meters out, no dangerous currents, soft sand perfect for playing, and plenty of food and restroom options nearby.

Why it's perfect for kids

  • Minimal waves: Waves rarely exceed 8-12 inches
  • Shallow water: Walk 50 meters out and the water barely reaches an adult's waist
  • No currents: Sheltered location eliminates rip current risk
  • Soft sand: No rocks or sharp shells
  • Nearby amenities: Restrooms, food, first aid steps from the beach
  • Shade available: Natural palm trees and umbrella rentals
For families: Arrive early to grab a spot under a natural palm tree for shade. Bring water shoes for the little ones - though the sand is soft, they may tire of walking. The Poc-Na beach club is family-friendly and affordable.

The Legendary Playa Norte Sunset

Playa Norte sunsets are considered the most spectacular in the Cancun region. Thanks to its west-facing orientation, the sun drops directly into the sea, painting the sky in shades of orange, pink, and purple. The best viewing spots are from the Buho's lounge chairs or the water's edge.
