Everything you need to know to enjoy the beaches of Cancun with peace of mind. Verified information and practical safety tips.

Is Cancun Safe to Visit?

Cancun is safe for tourists

Cancun is one of the safest tourist destinations in Mexico. The Hotel Zone has 24/7 police surveillance, security cameras and constant patrols. Over 20 million tourists visit Cancun each year without incidents in tourist areas.

Cancun's economy depends on tourism, so local, state and federal authorities invest heavily in the safety of tourist areas. The National Guard and Municipal Police maintain a visible presence throughout the Hotel Zone.

Important: Lifeguards

Lifeguards typically operate from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Outside these hours, you swim at your own risk. Never swim alone, at night, or under the influence of alcohol.

Hotel Zone Safety

The Cancun Hotel Zone (Boulevard Kukulcan, Km 0 to Km 25) is one of the safest areas in all of Mexico for tourists. It features:

  • 24/7 police patrols
  • Security cameras along the entire boulevard
  • National Guard at strategic points
  • Private security at every hotel and shopping plaza
  • Clinics and hospitals just minutes away

Safe Transportation

Public transit (R1 and R2 routes)

The R1 and R2 bus routes run through the Hotel Zone and are safe. The cost is 12-15 MXN. They operate from approximately 5:00 AM to 12:00 AM.

Taxis

Always use official taxis with established rates. Hotel Zone taxis have fixed fares. At the airport, use only official transportation counters. Never accept unidentified taxis.

Uber and ride-hailing apps

Uber works in Cancun but may have restrictions in the Hotel Zone. It is a safe and generally more affordable option than taxis. DiDi also operates in the area.

Tip: Airport transfer

Book your airport-to-hotel transfer in advance. Official airport services are safe but more expensive. Budget between 600-1,200 MXN depending on the zone. See the complete getting there guide.

Beach Safety Tips

  • Biodegradable sunscreen: It is mandatory at many beaches to protect the reefs. Bring your own to avoid fines.
  • Don't leave belongings unattended: Use a waterproof bag or leave valuables in the hotel safe.
  • Hydration: Cancun's heat is intense. Drink water constantly, especially if you're at the beach all day.
  • Rip currents: If caught in a current, don't fight it. Swim parallel to shore until you're out of the current.
  • Marine life: Wear water shoes in rocky areas like Punta Nizuc. Watch out for jellyfish in season (August-October).
  • Sargassum: From May to August there may be sargassum buildup on some beaches. Check conditions on our live alerts page.
