Answer 5 questions and discover your ideal beach in Cancun
Cancun has 18 public beaches, and while they all share white sand and turquoise water, each one offers a completely different experience. A family with small children should not go to the same beach as a group of friends looking for parties, and a photographer chasing the perfect sunset needs a different location than someone who wants to snorkel. Our quiz helps you find the beach that truly matches what you are looking for.
After personally walking every beach in Cancun, documenting their conditions, and talking with hundreds of visitors, we designed this questionnaire with the five questions that truly matter when choosing a beach.
Each quiz question evaluates one of the factors that most influence your beach experience:
The fundamental difference between Cancun's beaches lies in their geographic orientation. The Hotel Zone is shaped like a "7": the horizontal stretch (north) faces the Bay of Mujeres, with protected, calm waters. The vertical stretch (south) faces the open Caribbean Sea, with strong waves and powerful currents.
Bay beaches (Langosta, Caracol, Linda) have light turquoise water, gradual depth, and virtually no waves. They are the favorites of families and beginners. Open sea beaches (Delfines, Marlin, Ballenas) have a deeper blue, finer sand, waves that can exceed one meter in height, and currents that demand respect.
There is also an intermediate zone, the "elbow" of the peninsula (Forum, Chac Mool), where waves are moderate and the atmosphere blends tourism with local life. Understanding this distinction is the key to avoiding surprises.
After visiting every Cancun beach at different times, days of the week, and weather conditions, we noticed patterns that no tourist brochure mentions. For example, Playa Delfines is spectacular for sunset photos, but in the morning it has strong wind that kicks up sand. Playa Forum is perfect for partying on a Saturday, but on a Tuesday at 8 AM it is surprisingly quiet.
We discovered that Playa Caracol has the best casual snorkeling in the entire Hotel Zone, with fish visible just meters from shore. That Playa Langosta is where Cancun locals take their own children. And that Playa Ballenas, despite its intimidating name, rarely has more than 20 people along its entire stretch.
Our quiz distills all this field experience into five simple questions. You do not need to research each beach individually — just answer honestly and we will give you a recommendation based on real data.
