Month-by-month guide with weather, prices, sargassum and seasons to help you choose the perfect date based on what matters most to you.
Cancun has tropical weather year-round, with temperatures between 24°C and 34°C (75-93°F), so the question is rarely whether it will be warm. What changes from month to month is rainfall, sargassum, prices and how crowded the beaches are. Choosing a date really means deciding what you are willing to trade off: paying more for almost guaranteed weather, or saving money in exchange for some rain and a little uncertainty.
The general rule is simple: the best time to travel is from December to April, the peak season. That is when the most stable weather, the calmest sea and the lowest sargassum levels all line up. November is the great shoulder month: hurricane season ends on November 30, showers become less frequent and prices have not yet gone up. Best weather, very little rain, very low sargassum (especially December to March). High prices, crowded beaches. Ideal for a first visit. Temperature: 25-30°C.
Rain begins (short tropical showers). Moderate prices, fewer tourists. Sargassum rises to moderate-to-high levels. Temperature: 28-33°C.
Frequent rain and peak hurricane activity in September and October. July and August bring peak sargassum and summer vacations; September and October bring the lowest prices (-40%). Temperature: 27-34°C.
Hurricane season ends, rain decreases and sargassum is low. Prices are still low-season before December kicks off. Temperature: 25-29°C.
Each card sums up the four factors that matter most when picking a date: average temperature, rain, sargassum and price. The highlighted months are the ones we recommend if your calendar is flexible.
This is peak season and the option we recommend for a first visit. Days are sunny, rain is scarce and the sea is usually calm, so you can plan excursions with little risk of cancellation. That reliability comes at a double price: the highest rates of the year and busier beaches. Some weeks within this period are especially in demand, such as Christmas and New Year's in Cancun, spring break in March and Easter week (Semana Santa) in Cancun. If your dates fall on any of them, book flights and hotel as far ahead as you can.
After Easter week, demand drops and prices become moderate. May is still mostly dry, though very hot; in June the afternoon showers begin. The thing to watch is sargassum, which rises to moderate-to-high levels in these months. They are good months if budget and peace and quiet matter more to you than having a perfect beach every single day.
Many families can only travel in summer, which is why July keeps high prices despite the rain and heat. August eases off a bit on price. Both months are peak sargassum season, so it pays to stay near the beaches on the north side of the Hotel Zone, which receive far less seaweed. Check the current sargassum status in Cancun a few days before you leave to choose your beach.
These are the cheapest and least crowded months, but also the rainiest and the peak of hurricane season. If you pick these dates, buy insurance that covers weather cancellations, prefer refundable rates and follow official advisories in the days before your trip. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30 and showers become less frequent as the month goes on. Sargassum is already low, temperatures are pleasant and hotels are not yet charging peak-season rates. For many travelers it is the best balance of weather and price all year.
February and March. Sunny days, 28-29°C, almost no rain, calm seas. Perfect for a full day at the beach.
September to November. Hotels up to 50% cheaper. November is the best option (less rain than September and October, and already outside hurricane season).
September and October. Virtually empty beaches. Ideal if you seek tranquility, but beware of hurricanes.
December to March, when levels are very low. The best period to enjoy turquoise water without seaweed.
December to April is ideal: calm seas and moderate heat make long beach days with young children easier. If you are tied to the school calendar and can only travel in summer, plan beach time for the morning, keep afternoons for indoor activities in case of rain, and choose family-friendly beaches on the north side, with gentle waves and less sargassum.
November offers the best value: low rates, already pleasant weather and outside hurricane season. September and October are even cheaper, but we only recommend them if your dates are flexible and your bookings are refundable. May and June are a reasonable middle ground.
The water is warm all year, so what really matters is how calm the sea is. From December to April it is usually calm and clear, except on days when a cold front blows in and the waves cloud the water for a while. In the rainy season, storms can also reduce visibility. Travel from December to March. In April it may begin appearing moderately, and May to October is its peak season, with the worst months in July and August. If your dates fall in those months, do not cancel: the beaches on the north side of the Hotel Zone, such as Las Perlas, Langosta and Playa Linda, are the least affected, and Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is the most sheltered in the region. November and May offer good weather without the peak-season crowds. If having the beach almost to yourself matters most, September and October are the emptiest months, as long as you accept the risk of rain. Avoid the holiday weeks of December, March and Easter week.
Whatever month you choose, pack for the season: light clothing and biodegradable sunscreen always, plus a light rain jacket if you travel between June and October. You will find the full list in what to pack for Cancun.
The best time to visit Cancun is from December to April, the peak season. The weather is dry and warm (25-30°C), it falls outside hurricane season, sargassum is very low and the sea is usually calm. February and March have the best weather, though they are also among the most expensive months. November is the best alternative if you want good weather at lower prices.
The cheapest months to travel to Cancun are September, October and November. Hotel prices drop up to 40-50% compared to peak season. May and June also offer moderate prices. The downside is that September and October are the peak of hurricane season; November, once that season ends, is usually the best balance of price and weather.
From December to March sargassum levels are very low, making it the best time to avoid it. In April it may begin appearing moderately; May to October is peak sargassum season, with the worst months in July and August, and in November levels are low again. The beaches on the north side of the Hotel Zone (Las Perlas, Langosta, Playa Linda) receive less sargassum than those on the east side.
The official hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with peak activity in September and October. However, hurricanes that directly impact Cancun are infrequent. Hotels have safety protocols and many offer changes or refunds in case of major weather events.
