How to Use Our Interactive Cancun Beach Map
Our interactive map lets you explore all 18 public beaches in Cancun with real-time updated information. Each marker shows the exact GPS location, current sea conditions, recent photographs, and a rating based on real visitors. You can filter by beach type (family-friendly, quiet, party, or water sports), zoom in to find public access points near your hotel, and plan routes from any point in the Hotel Zone.
To get the most out of the map, activate the filters in the left sidebar. If you are looking for beaches with gentle waves for children, select the "family" filter. If you prefer less crowded beaches, filter by "quiet". The color indicators show the current sea state: green means excellent conditions, yellow indicates moderate waves, and red warns about strong currents where caution is recommended.
The 4 Beach Zones in Cancun
Cancun's geography divides its beaches into four distinct zones, and understanding this division is key to choosing where to spend your beach day.
North Zone: Bay of Mujeres (Km 1-7)
North Zone beaches face the Bay of Mujeres, giving them calm waters, minimal waves, and a gradual depth perfect for families with small children. Here you will find Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol, and Playa Linda. The water is light turquoise and the sand is fine and white. This is also the closest zone to downtown Cancun, with easy access by public transportation. Playa Tortugas is the departure point for the Isla Mujeres ferry, making it one of the busiest.
Central Zone: The Elbow (Km 8-12)
The central zone corresponds to the "elbow" of the Hotel Zone, where the peninsula turns south. Here the waves begin to intensify. Playa Forum and Playa Chac Mool are the stars of this zone. Forum is the epicenter of nightlife, with direct access to Coco Bongo and other bars. Chac Mool offers a more local atmosphere, popular among residents. Waves are moderate to strong, with occasional currents.
South Zone: Open Sea (Km 13-22)
Southern beaches face the open Caribbean Sea, with stronger waves, higher surf, and currents that demand attention. In return, they offer spectacular scenery and fewer crowds. Playa Delfines, Cancun's most famous beach thanks to its iconic sign, is located here. Also Playa Marlin (Blue Flag certified), Playa Ballenas, and Playa Nizuc. These beaches are perfect for watching sunsets, taking photographs, and feeling the power of the Mexican Caribbean.
Isla Mujeres: The Nearby Escape
Just 20 minutes by ferry from Playa Tortugas, Isla Mujeres offers Playa Norte, consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. Its waters are incredibly calm, shallow, and a turquoise blue that looks unreal. If you have a full day to spare, the trip to Isla Mujeres is absolutely worth it. The ferry costs approximately 300 Mexican pesos round trip.
How to Choose Your Beach by Location
Your beach choice should largely depend on where you are staying. If your hotel is on Boulevard Kukulcan between Km 1 and Km 7, the North Zone beaches are minutes away on foot. If you are in the Km 9-12 area, Forum and Chac Mool are your closest options. For hotels in the south (Km 13-22), Delfines and Marlin are the natural choice.
A common mistake is taking a taxi to a distant beach unnecessarily. Many of the best beaches are just meters from the hotels. Use our map to identify the nearest public beach to your accommodation before spending on transportation.
Public Access Points: Your Right by Law
In Mexico, all beaches are federal property and open to the public by law. No hotel, restaurant, or beach club can block your access to the sea. However, many establishments place lounge chairs and umbrellas that give the impression the beach is private. The strip of sand from the high tide line to the water is always free for public use.
Cancun has more than 20 marked public access points along the Hotel Zone. On our map, these access points are marked so you can locate the nearest one. The most well-known access points include Playa Delfines (with free parking), Playa Chac Mool, Playa Marlin, and the piers at Playa Tortugas and Playa Langosta.
Navigation Tips: Transportation, Parking, and Distances
Cancun's Hotel Zone stretches 22 kilometers in the shape of a "7". Getting between beaches is straightforward if you know the options:
- R-1 and R-2 Bus: These buses run the entire Hotel Zone for approximately 15 pesos (less than $1 USD). This is the most economical way to move between beaches. Buses run every 5-10 minutes during the day.
- Taxi: A ride within the Hotel Zone costs between 80 and 250 pesos depending on distance. Negotiate the price before getting in, as Cancun taxis do not use meters.
- Parking: Playa Delfines has the largest free parking lot. Forum, Chac Mool, and Tortugas have paid parking or rely on nearby shopping center lots. In the North Zone, finding parking is easier than in the central zone.
- Walking: Adjacent beaches are usually 1-2 kilometers apart. A walk along the sand from Forum to Chac Mool takes about 15 minutes. From Marlin to Delfines, approximately 40 minutes walking along the beach.
- Bicycle: A bike path runs along much of Boulevard Kukulcan. Some companies rent bicycles by the day at affordable prices.
