Cancun with Kids: The Complete Family Guide (2026)
Cancun is one of the best beach destinations for families with kids. With warm waters year-round, top-notch infrastructure, and a huge variety of activities, it is hard to go wrong. But traveling with children requires extra planning, and this guide gives you everything you need to make your family trip perfect.
The best beaches for kids in Cancun
Not all Cancun beaches are suitable for young children. The eastern coast of the Hotel Zone has strong waves and dangerous currents. The ideal family beaches are on the north side, sheltered within the Bay of Mujeres.
Playa Las Perlas (Km 2.5)
This is arguably the safest beach in the entire Hotel Zone for children. The water is shallow, crystal clear, and virtually wave-free. It has a small playground, free palapas, and public restrooms. On weekends it fills up with local families, which is a good sign. Access is free and there is parking nearby.
Playa Langosta (Km 5)
Another excellent family option with calm, shallow waters. It is next to a pier where ferries depart for Isla Mujeres, so you can combine beach time with an excursion. There are nearby restaurants and natural shade areas. The seabed is sandy with no rocks, perfect for the little ones.
Playa Caracol (Km 8.5)
Located at the "elbow" of the Hotel Zone, Playa Caracol offers relatively calm waters and is very close to Plaza La Isla and other amenities. It has lifeguards and is a great option if you are staying in the central part of the Hotel Zone.
General rule: any beach between Km 1 and Km 8 of the Hotel Zone is safer for children than the beaches from Km 9 onward. Check our family beaches guide for more details.

Recommended family hotels
Not all all-inclusive hotels are designed for families. Some are exclusively for adults. Here are proven family-friendly options:
- Moon Palace The Grand (Km 36): age-specific kids' clubs, water park, go-kart track. One of the most complete options for families. The kids' club accepts children from age 4.
- Royal Solaris (Km 18.7): a more affordable option with a solid children's activity program and family-friendly evening shows.
- Hyatt Ziva Cancún (Km 8.5): excellent location near calm beaches, with KidZ Club and children's pools.
- Fiesta Americana Condesa (Km 16.5): Fiesta Kids program with supervised activities. Good value for money.
What to pack for the kids
In addition to the usual items, these are the must-have articles for a trip to Cancun with children:
- Biodegradable sunscreen SPF 50+: children's skin is more sensitive. Reapply every 2 hours.
- Long-sleeve UV shirt: much better than constantly reapplying sunscreen. Kids can swim in it.
- Water shoes: they protect against rocks, shells, and coral. Essential if you plan to visit cenotes or rocky areas.
- Children's insect repellent: look for formulas with a maximum of 10% DEET for children under 12.
- Basic medications: children's acetaminophen, oral rehydration salts, anti-diarrheal medication, waterproof bandages.
- Floaties and kids' snorkel gear: although you can buy them in Cancun, tourist prices are steep.
- Backpack with snacks: having crackers, fruit, and water always on hand prevents many meltdowns.
Safety tips with kids
Safety is the number one priority when traveling with family. Here are the key points:
- Never leave children alone on the beach. Even at calm beaches, water levels can change rapidly.
- Constant hydration. The heat and humidity of Cancun (30-35°C) dehydrate children faster than adults. Always carry water.
- Avoid peak sun hours (11:00 AM to 3:00 PM). Schedule indoor activities or naps during that time.
- ID wristbands. At parks like Xcaret or Ventura Park, put a wristband with your phone number on your child.
- Watch out for currents. Always respect the beach flags. If there is a red flag, neither adults nor children should enter the water.
Restaurants with kids' menus
When you venture outside the hotel, these are places where children will be comfortable:
- Lorenzillo's (Km 10.5): seafood restaurant with a lagoon view. Kids' menu from $180 MXN and high chairs available.
- La Habichuela Sunset (Km 12.6): Mexican cuisine in a pleasant setting. They welcome children and have mild options.
- Peter's Restaurante (downtown): international cuisine with children's options. Moderate prices from $120 MXN for a kids' plate.
- 100% Natural (multiple locations): fresh juices, smoothies, salads, and sandwiches. Healthy kids' menu from $95 MXN.
Best time to travel with kids
The ideal season for families is November to April. The reasons:
- Pleasant temperatures (25-30°C) without being excessive.
- Minimal chance of sargassum on the beaches.
- Dry season: very little rain.
- No hurricanes (hurricane season runs from June to November).
If you travel in July or August for school holidays, prepare for more heat (33-36°C), the possibility of brief tropical rain showers in the afternoons, and more sargassum on the beaches. It is still a great trip, but plan outdoor activities for early morning.
Medical services for children
Cancun has good medical infrastructure. In case of emergency:
- Hospital Galenia (Av. Tulum): private hospital with 24/7 pediatric emergency care. Accepts most international insurance.
- Hospiten Cancún (Hotel Zone, Km 7): 24-hour emergency room with service in English and Spanish.
- Farmacias Similares and Farmacias del Ahorro: there is one on every corner. Many pediatric medications are sold over the counter.
Important tip: purchase travel insurance that covers the entire family before departure. Private medical consultations in Cancun cost between $800 and $1,500 MXN, and an emergency can be much more expensive.
Getting around with kids
Getting around Cancun with children has its particularities:
- R1/R2 buses: they cost only $15 MXN and run throughout the Hotel Zone. However, they have no air conditioning, get crowded, and have no space for strollers. Workable for older kids, uncomfortable with babies.
- Taxis: more comfortable but without child car seats. Negotiate the fare before getting in. A ride within the Hotel Zone costs $100-$200 MXN.
- Car rental: the best option if traveling with young children because you can bring your own car seat. From $600 MXN/day with local agencies. Drive carefully: traffic in Cancun can be chaotic.
Cancun with kids is not only possible, it is a wonderful experience if you plan well. The north-side beaches are safe, activities cater to all ages, and the tourism infrastructure makes things much easier. Start planning by exploring our trip planner to organize each day of your family adventure.
